Biography
Veljko Despotović

Born on October 1st, 1931 in Zagreb (Yugoslavia). Passed away on April 6th, 2013 in Belgrade (Serbia). He finished his elementary and high school in Belgrade. He graduated from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade in 1958.

In 1950 he started his voluntary cooperation with the production designer Miomir Denić. From 1952 until 1962 he was working as an assistant in theatre, film and television. From 1964 he worked as an independent production designer on domestic and foreign films. He created production design for more than a hundred of feature films, three theatre plays, as well as several hundred of television dramas, serials, short films and entertainment shows for Television Belgrade.

He was a member of the Association of Applied Arts Artists and Designers of Serbia (ULUPUDS) and the Academy of Film Art and Science of Serbia (AFUN). He participated in a number of group exhibitions of applied arts in Serbia, as well as in the exhibition “Yugoslav Film Production Design 1945–75” at FEST in 1975.

Since 2014 the Faculty of Applied Arts in Belgrade has been awarding “Veljko Despotović” Prize for the best student work in the field of Film Production Design.

  • 2009 Fipresci Annual Film Award for the best production design in 2008 for the films Tears for Sale and The Tour.
  • 2009 Ibiza Film Festival: “Best Production Design Award” for the film Tears for Sale.
  • 2013 Sopot Film Festival: “Best Production Design Award” for the film Falsifier (awarded posthumously).
  • 2014 Fipresci Annual Film Award for the best production design in 2013 for the film Falsifier (awarded posthumously).
