About the symposium

The first module of the multidisciplinary project in the framework of the Creative Europe Programme, Ceramics and Its Dimensions, which encompasses social, technological and artistic fields of ceramics, refers to the International Symposium entitled Ceramics between Change and Challenge, between Past and Present organized by the Museum of Applied Art in partnership with the National Museum in Belgrade and Porzellanikon State Museum (Staatliches Museum für Porzellan) in Selb. The symposium will be held in Belgrade in the Gallery of Frescoes, on May 20th - May 21st 2015.

The symposium focuses on different fields of ceramics and its use in all social spheres, observed in a variety of social and sociological contexts, from Baroque to the present day. The symposium has been conceived as a kind of nucleus of the project in which experts from various scientific and professional areas will present their achievements through four sessions and open discussions. In addition to modern technical and technological developments in the production of ceramics, the public will also be presented with the latest research of the role and importance of ceramics in European culture, architecture, history, heritage, arts, as well as social needs for ceramics of today's European society.

20 experts from 10 European countries will take part in the symposium. Most of them are eminent European experts from various fields of ceramics such as Prof. Jürgen G. Heinrich, PhD, former President of the German and European Association of Ceramics and the Secretary of the International Foundation of Ceramics, then Prof. Jürgen Huber, PhD, one of the leaders in the field of European technology in the production of ceramics, Prof. Ray Jonson, PhD, professor emeritus and director of Staffordshire University (England) Film Archive, whose lecture is about the role of archives in documenting the history of ceramics, Hologer Raithel, Director General of KAHLA/Thüringen Porzellan GmbH, and Others. Audience will be addressed by designers, historians, art historians and archaeologists from Latvia, Estonia, France, Italy, Spain and Serbia, who carry out research into the history, aesthetics and importance of ceramics in different historical periods and social aspects. Among the the announced participants are Wilhelm Siemen, director of the State Museum Porzellanikon in Selb, then Sylvie Legrand Rossi (), head of the curatorial department of the Musée Nissim de Camondo in Paris, followed by Jaime Coll Conesa, PhD, director of Museo Nacional de Cerámica in Valencia, Kai Lobjakas, director of Estonian Museum of Applied Art and Design in Tallinn, Mateja Kos, PhD, counselor at the National Museum of Slovenia, Valentina Mazzotti, PhD, curator of the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, Marta Suste, an associate at the Museum of Porcelain Riga. Experts from our country announced to participate in the Symposium are Vesna Bikic, PhD, Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Archaeology in Belgrade, Ljiljana Miletic Abramovic, BA, director of the Museum of Applied Art, Biljana Djordjevic, BA, advisor at the National Museum, Biljana Vukotic, senior curator at the Museum of Applied Art, Jelena Popovic and Biljana Crvenkovic, curators at the Museum of Applied Art.

The aim of this symposium is not only to bring together various experts from different research fields of ceramics, but also to lay the basis through a multidisciplinary approach for further consideration of the role and future of ceramics production development in European society. In that regard, all presentations will be published in the Symposium proceedings.
