Space and Time in the Avant-Garde Film (workshop)
27 February 2014, 12:00 to 16:00

The attendants will be given opportunity to learn more about the basic conventions of the film narrative and visual styles at the Master Class workshop Space and Time in the Avant-Garde Film. The period covered ranges from the realism to expressionism. As different from the predominant realistic conventions and continual editing in documentaries and feature films, the canonic film avant-garde in the 1920s and 1930s as well as the neo-avant-garde (and its variants) after the World War II develop alternative conventions related to the film space and time, visualized in the symbolic and oneiric space, transformed time and discontinued editing.

This now classical film experiments within the art avant-garde field exerted a strong influence on the contemporary experimental film and video. Particular attention will be paid to the surrealism, Dada and psycho-drama film as well as to the film makers Jean Cocteau, Maya Deren and Kenneth Anger.
