Retrospective Exhibition of Dušan Petričić

1 – 23 October 2008

Dušan Petričić is Serbian – Canadian cartoonist and illustrator, born in 1946. The exhibition intitled Autobiographic represents an overview of his entire work. During the last four decades, Petričić published his work in the most significant Serbian, Canadian and American daily newspapers and magazines. He illustrated thirty three books for children and adults, and created graphic solutions that enhace childhood of many generations of youngYougoslavians and Canadians. Till nowdays he continues to create with the same enthousiasm! Every year at least one new book illustrated by Petričić appears.

Autobiographic is a retrospective exhibition, and the gallery space of the Museum of Applied Art imposed certain conditions of the artwork presentation. It was impossible to present the entire work of Dušan Petričić, simply because it includes several thousands pieces so we have decided to present some of the most significant solutions for children’s book illustrations, posters and calendars, together with cartoons and illustrations published in Litterary Magazine ( Književne novine), Vidici, Poletarc, Kekec, Evening News ( Večernje novosti), TV News ( TV novosti), Economy Politics ( Ekonomska politika), NIN, etc, as well as many other graphic solutions (drawings for animated films, theater costumes and the credits or scenographies for television shows) created during his stay in Belgrade (from 1965 till 1991).

After a short stay in Rome (1992-1993), Petričić leaves for Toronto in August 1993 and adjusts his art to American-Canadian market principles, where there are no requirements for creation of these „ alternative graphic solutions“. From Canadian period we have exhibited the cartoons and illustrations for The New York Times Book Review, Wall Street Journal, The Toronto Star and Scientific American. The exhibition presents also the illustrations for children’s books for which Petričić was many times awarded in Canada.

Cartoonist, illustrator, designer, animator and portrayist, Dušan Petričić is first of all humorist with witty approach to subject he treates. His creativity during the Belgrade period remains the base for the later developement of illustration of children’s books in Serbia, also fot the cartoons with universal subjects and witty graphic solutions of publicity materials ( animated booklet, posters, calendars...). After he moved to Toronto, Petričić became one of the leading children’s books’cartoonist and illustrator in Canada and in USA. The exhibition Autobiographic at the Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade gives us an oportunity to compare for the first time these two periods of his enormous work. In honour of the previous Petričić’s exhibition at the Museum of Applied Art in Belgrade, held 30 years ago, Adam Puslojić wrote that Petričić is „characterizationist“ (painter of characters) and not „ cartoonist.“: „ At its best inventivness, creations of this artist include accomplished values of classic drawing but also integrate the magic dimension of thinking, an idea condensed into an essential sign and in its origines .“ This way of visual thinking is still present in Petričić’s work, and the quality of adjustment to different kind of temptations and interest in dealing with various aspects of problems, while constantly inventing on the field of projecting his heroes’ characters, are what makes Petričić one of the most complex artists of the present day.
