Napoleon III, Second half of 19th century

Wood, mother of pearl, marquetry

MAA Inv. No. 21380

The department possesses a collection of objects decorated with ivory and mother of pearl inlays. Dating from seventeenth, eighteenth to the nineteenth century the artefacts represent a wide variety of utility objects (small tables, mirrors, cigarette boxes caskets, chairs, armchairs, bishops' staffs, icons…). This technique, popular in the East and the West equally, was particularly applied in the decoration of furniture in the second half of the nineteenth century, in the style of Napoleon III.
