Embroidered Icon

Ohrid, 14th century

Warp – linen, cotton and silk thread, metal thread; embroidered and painted

28.5 x 21.5 cm

MAA Inv. No. 5188

The icon with the representation of the Virgin with Christ is made in a very rare technique: the faces and hands were painted, but the rest was embroidered. It was most probably the item of personal devotion, but it is also might have represented central part of a podea or served as decorative book cover.

It was conceived under the influence of icons with metal decorative covers, like those found on several icons preserved in Ohrid. Its closest analogies are the 15th-century icons. This icon is unique and it belongs to the best works of its time.
