During the 19th century, dressing of the bourgeois class in Serbia went through a process of transformation from Oriental dress to European fashion costume. The European influence became more obvious from the middle of the 19th century, and became prevalent from 1880's on.

The female members of the bourgeois class also used the services of the local tailor shops. They found it important to get closer to the European fashion centers, not to lag behind following the trends. One of the prestigious tailor shops that worked in Belgrade at the time was the tailor shop of Berta Alkalaj. In this shop the dress worn by Danica Paligorić at her wedding to infantry major Nikola Jorgovanović in Niš in 1911.
