Mounts for the Book of Gospels

Herzegovina

Around 1580s

Beaten silver, gold plating

Central plate 14x16,5 cm

Smaller plates 4,5x9cm

MAA Inv. No. 7021

Another example of the sixteenth century goldwork from Herzegovina.

Only the five silver plates are preserved (the central plate depicting the Descent to Hell and four smaller ones the Evangelists). The gold plating is applied to achieve colouristic effects. Due to its stylistic peculiarities this Book of Gospels correlates to the mounts on the Book of Gospels from The Trinity church in Pljevlja, the preserved parts of the mounts from the monastery Piva as well as the parts of the mounts from the Old Orthodox church in Sarajevo. Therefore, one may assume that all of them came from the same workshop, the one that produced the most beautiful works of the Serbian goldwork in the second half of the sixteenth century.
